On Wednesday the 15th of April, we (the year 12 students) spent the day doing a mini installation based on typography. At first, we had an excercise where we had to make a letter or character (e.g, an exclamation mark) out of the contents of a match box, which basically included matches and match boxes. We then got to work making the letters, though we were instructed not to make something really basic such as sticking 2 match sticks together to make a T. We also were advised to incorporate the surroundings into the piece, if possible. I created the letter E by inserting matches into cracks on the wall that were shaped like the letter E. Some people’s were very creative, e.g, someone made match stick people doing the YMCA pose.
After this solo project, we were put into groups. After that, we were instructed to think of a word that has the same amount of letters as the people in our group, and that relates to the space. My group picked the word “hole”, seeing as there were lots of holes in the walls. We then were instructed to create the word out of card board, each person selecting a letter to make. The word in full was then stuck some place in the space where it was appropriate.
The letter E was by far the best because I made it, and most of the other letters fell down after, proving that mine was superior.Year 12 Visual Arts student.
